SOCIAL OUTREACH PROGRAMME

SOCIAL OUTREACH PROGRAMME
UMED
Life is short and the older you get, the more you feel it. Indeed, the shorter it is. People lose their capacity to walk, run, travel, think, and experience life. I realize how important it is to use the time I have. Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing and yes I'm blessed it was a wonderful experience working in UMED with Mentally and Physically disabled people making different handicrafts. It was not only handicrafts it was a beautiful experience which we could have missed if it was not compulsory. I, Shane Fernandes voice of this blog as you all know joined St.Andrews College last year. It is my second year in college and there is this SOP which is compulsory for every Second Year Student whether it's the Financed or Self Financed Course student have to compulsorily do it. People staying in different areas selected different centers whichever is nearby to their place of residing. We have to do minimum 20 hours of SOP.

So we started our SOP back on 15th July 2017. We all had an orientation on that day. We were given instructions of the things we had to do there. A group of 15 students were divided into 3 groups of 5 each and we had to do SOP there as a group of a five. We finally decided to do our SOP next Saturday. We met the very next week on Saturday. There were two routes to this place one from Suncity and one from Dev Talao. The one from Suncity was very convenient to me and like 5-8 mins to the center. So I decided to take a ride to that place and unfortunately for me the place was halfway flooded. I saw people on their two wheelers staring at the distress caused on their faces because of that flood anyways I went back to my place to park the scooty already late my group mates calling  me I caught an ST bus reached there and I saw my group mates walking out of the center towards me and they said "Light gaya! Sab machines bandh h, nahi aana chaiye tha." those words echo in my ears and haunt me I even wake up in middle of the night in fear of those words, lol that was too much!
Anyways the next week Friday the 28th July, We kept our next SOP meet and it was quiet a wonderful experience. we started making Hair clips. It was difficult at the beginning and we were startled the way those handicaps were making clips. It gives us the message that no matter what we go through who we are it's the willpower, belief and optimism that helps them to do their work. After making hair clips we made paper plates, communions. We also learnt how these things are actually made. After finishing all the work we coversed with those handicap people asking them their name and whereabouts. It was sad to know that some of them didn't knew their age. Before leaving we had a word with Sister who ran the place she told us about the centers schedule. The struggles it faced initially. Most of the churches' communion is supplied by UMED. UMED also supplies communion to different churches across Qatar and Dubai.

It was really nice to know about this incredible preposterous center away from the warzone doing incredible work. God we had to go thru Patient times to experience this. Maybe we weren't prepared by heart to serve that day. It was worth. Maybe the next time I go there it won't be the same fresh experience but ya! It's Worth! It's Serving the Lord. The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart and yes it was a beautiful experience halfway completion of SOP.
I'll be making a vlog on this experience so stay tuned the SOP is not over yet. Also if you know any handicap unemployed person you can contact UMED 0250-6516645
